Shropshire is one of England's most rural counties, yet hosts a surprisingly large amount of model flying activity. Within an hour's drive of Shrewsbury, we have at least ten clubs, along with national shows at RAF Cosford and Weston Park.
Sleap Airfield lies in the heart of the Shropshire Countryside, approximately ten miles north of the County town of Shrewsbury. We have a membership that averages around thirty and we fly both electric and engine powered, fixed wing and rotary models.
Sleap Model flying club is BMFA affiliated and was formed in 1964 as the Shropshire Model Aeronautical Association (a bit of a mouthful, so we later became Sleap Model Flyers).
We are a friendly bunch of enthusiasts and regularly fly on Saturdays, Sundays and Weekdays. Evening flying is also popular during British Summer time; the combination of warm summer evenings and spectacular Shropshire sunsets over the nearby Welsh Hills all make for a great evening's flying.
The club has very few restrictions placed upon its flying activities, but nevertheless, Sleap is an active airfield. It sees considerably flying from full-size aircraft and the daily training activities from the Defence Helicopter Training School at nearby RAF Shawbury.
We have use of a tarmac, westerly-facing run which remains accessible all year round. Airfields naturally generate noise, but we still need to respect our neighbours; as such, we insist that no model exceeding the recommended 82 dba noise limit is flown.
We generally have two or three events each year; usually a warbird event organised in conjunction with North West Warbirds and a retro day with the assistance of PB Models.
Be sure to check out the History page to find out more about Sleap Airfield's past.
If you are an existing British Model Flying Association (BMFA) member and would like to come and fly at Sleap as a guest, simply send us a message via the Contact Us page and we will make all the arrangements for you.
Sleap is an active airfield and, as such, is it not possible to visit our flying location without assistance from an existing club member.
If you are interested in becoming a member, please see our Membership page.
