Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Site Access and Operational Changes (from Oct. 2024)

These questions relate to the revised rules, introduced in response to operational changes from the RAF.

Q) Have we given due consideration to the risk from a plane on finals arriving while we’re driving down the access route from the peritrack?
A) Yes, this was discussed extensively with SAC, as we shared the concern. We will drive along a concrete track that runs alongside the runway 18/36 runoff area. This is regularly used by the farmer without issue. SAC confirm that 18/36 is the lesser used of the two active runways, but is still considered wide enough to maintain safety in the unlikely event that a plane arrives unexpectedly once we’ve entered the route.

Q) Is the Avoid circle in effect 7 days a week, or just when RAF helicopters are active?
A) The area is to be avoided 7 days a week. The RAF will leave equipment in the area.

Q) Can we overfly the Avoid area, such as when taking from from East-to-West?
A) Yes; the restriction applies to operations on the ground, not in the air. Modellers should aim to turn away from the Avoid area on takeoff to minimise the risk of contact with RAF equipment.

Q) How big is the Avoid area?
A) We don’t yet know, but our assumption is that sticking to the ‘clean’ part of the runway and avoiding the rough area should keep us clear.

Q) Have we pushed back on these changes to SAC?
A) The changes have been initiated by RAF Shawbury. SAC have sought to minimise the impact on airfield operations, particularly with regard to our use. It has been made clear that our choices are limited by the operational requirements of the RAF; we can accept the changes and work within them, or vacate the site.

Q) Is the arrangement permanent?
A) The current expectation is that these arrangements will remain in place for more than a year.

Q) Why do we have to move the parking and pits areas?
A) To avoid any issues with downwash from active helicopters and to ensure that the general area is clear for RAF staff.
